What is the Best Way to Get Around Hurghada?
Picture this: you’ve just landed at Hurghada International Airport, the sun-kissed coast beckons, and the vibrant sounds of the city fill the air. As you step outside, the first question that comes to mind is, how do I get to my hotel? The answer isn’t just about hopping in the nearest taxi.
While taxis are a convenient option, they can sometimes overcharge unsuspecting visitors. Instead, consider using ride-hailing apps like Uber or Careem, which are widely available and typically more reliable. Expect to pay around 50-150 EGP (about $3-10) for a trip within the city. Public transport, though less common for tourists, consists of minibuses that are incredibly affordable, costing only a few Egyptian pounds. However, deciphering the routes can be tricky for first-timers in Hurghada.
What Currency Should I Use in Hurghada?
The Egyptian Pound (EGP) is the official currency in Hurghada, and having some cash on hand is essential. Many smaller shops and local markets may not accept credit cards, especially outside major tourist areas. As a rule of thumb, carry around 500 EGP for daily expenses, which will cover meals, transportation, and small purchases.
ATMs are widely available, but they might charge a fee for withdrawals. Using a currency exchange, you can often get better rates. Just keep an eye on exchange fees; some places offer more generous rates than others. Remember to check the current exchange rate before you go to avoid being shortchanged.
What Etiquette Should I Know When Visiting Hurghada?
Understanding local customs can make your experience in Hurghada more enjoyable. Egyptians are known for their hospitality, but being familiar with basic etiquette can go a long way. For instance, when greeting someone, a simple handshake is customary, but be mindful of personal space, especially with women.
Dress modestly, particularly when visiting non-tourist areas or religious sites. While swimsuits are acceptable at the beach and resorts, it’s best to cover up when exploring the city. Also, tipping is encouraged; a small amount (10-15%) at restaurants or for services is appreciated.
What Are Common Scams to Avoid in Hurghada?
Like many tourist hotspots, Hurghada has its share of scams. One prevalent trick involves sellers of goods who might inflate prices once they realize you’re a tourist. To combat this, research typical prices for items you plan to buy, especially souvenirs.
Another common scam involves taxi drivers who quote exorbitant fares. Always agree on a price before getting in, or better yet, use a ride-hailing service. Lastly, be cautious about unsolicited offers for tours or excursions on the street; always book through reputable companies like Velora Tours, ensuring you get a fair deal and a quality experience.
What Should You Pack for Your Trip to Hurghada?
Deciding what to pack is crucial when heading to Hurghada. The weather is typically warm and sunny, so lightweight, breathable clothing is a must. Don’t forget your swimsuit for those stunning Red Sea beaches, but also pack a light jacket for cooler evenings.
Sun protection is vital. Bring a high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses to safeguard against the strong sun. If you plan on exploring local attractions or going on excursions, comfortable walking shoes are essential. Lastly, a reusable water bottle will help you stay hydrated without contributing to plastic waste.
When is the Best Time to Visit Hurghada?
Timing your trip can significantly impact your experience in Hurghada. The best months to visit are from October to April, when temperatures are more manageable, averaging between 20-25°C (68-77°F). During the summer months, temperatures can soar above 40°C (104°F), making outdoor activities less enjoyable.
Additionally, visiting during off-peak times may also offer better prices on accommodations and excursions. Be aware of local holidays, as popular attractions can become crowded during these periods.
What Are the Best Local Dishes to Try in Hurghada?
Food is a big part of the Egyptian experience. While in Hurghada, be sure to try traditional dishes like koshari, a hearty mix of rice, lentils, and pasta topped with spicy tomato sauce. Another must-try is seafood; the Red Sea is known for its fresh catches. A meal in a local restaurant can cost around 100-200 EGP ($6-12), providing a delightful culinary adventure without breaking the bank.
While street food can be tempting, it’s best to sample from busy stalls where you can ensure food safety. Always opt for places that locals frequent, as this is usually a good sign of quality and authenticity.
